Trailing 30-15 in the third quarter, Ithaca’s girls basketball team cut St. Louis’ lead to three points with under a minute to play before falling at home Monday, 37-32.
St. Louis improves to 12-7 and maintains the rivalry Victory Bell, while Ithaca is 6-12.
A pair of free throws by Ithaca’s Libby Maurer made it 35-32 with 41 seconds to go. But St. Louis’ Kerregan Wilson matched her with two from the line with 25 seconds remaining, to push the Sharks’ lead to 37-32. Their defense held up from there for the win.
Halle Hoyt scored a game-high 14 points for St. Louis. Zoey Clarke scored 10 and Wilson finished with nine points.
For Ithaca, Alyssa Polash had 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Maurer had seen points, three assists and two steals.
St. Louis was coming off a non-conference loss at Clare last Friday, 46-24.
Paige Luneack scored eight for the Sharks, who were shut out in the second quarter to trail 21-6 at halftime.
Clare was led by Kendra Fouts and Fiona Gual with 10 points apiece.
The Yellowjackets won a TVC-Blue contest last Friday at Saginaw Valley Lutheran, 49-42 in overtime.
Maurer had 22 points and five assists, including five points in overtime to pull away. Polash 15 points and five steals for Ithaca.
Olivia Parker scored 23 points for Valley Lutheran.
St. Louis is home against Ogemaw Heights tomorrow, Friday, while Ithaca goes to Saginaw Nouvel.
Huskies beat Bears
Ashley, playing on the road, surprised Breckenridge early, leading 9-3 after the first quarter, before the Huskies rallied to lead 21-13 at halftime and win the MSAC contest, 42-29.
Maddie Breece scored 15 points to lead Breckenridge, which is 10-6 overall, 7-5 in the MSAC. Ashley is 3-15, 0-14.
For Ashley, Ellie Drummond finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals; Marissa Brady nine points, eight rebounds; and Karissa Brady nine points, five rebounds.
Breckenridge jumped on Montabella 19-2 in the first quarter last Friday, and won at home, 63-25.
Breece scored 18 points for the Huskies, while Kayla Goward had 11 points, Avery Westall nine points and Lily St. John and Emalee Noack seven points apiece.
Ashley beat Carson City-Crystal, 53-22.
Drummond had 28 points, seven rebounds and four steals for the Bears, and Karissa Brady 17 points and five rebounds. Jazmyne Good had 12 points and eight steals.
The Bears dropped a close one to Coleman, 32-31.
“We were able to lead this game most of the night, but were unable to finish the game in the last two minutes and hold on for the win,” Ashley coach Joe Shaw said.
Karissa Brady had 15 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals. Drummond had 10 rebounds.
Tomorrow, Friday, Breckenridge plays at Merrill and Ashley goes to Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart.
Alma splits
Alma lost on the road to TVC-Red leader Frankenmuth last Friday, 64-12.
Gracie Mellinger scored 12 points with four assist for the Panthers. Alauren Seeley had 10 points and six rebounds, and Kendall Town grabbed 10 boards.
Macy Donovan led Frankenmuth with 20 points and Alyson Peterson had 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Alma, 11-7, 8-4 TVC-Red, beat Swan Valley, 5-47.
Melinger and Seeley both scored 18 points, with Seeley grabbing seven rebounds. Giovanna Clark had eight points and five rebounds and Town scored nine points.
