[private]Alma High School grad Paul Gadde, an Alma College senior, was the Scots’ leading scorer with 16 points in their men’s basketball season opener, a 124-79 loss at home to Grinnell.
Grinnell, known for decades for playing the fastest paced offense in college basketball, established the lead with a strong 61-point first half. Alma countered with 42 points of their own before the break, led by Gadde’s efficient shooting, but the Pioneers’ high-octane offense continues to stretch the gap. As the game progressed, Grinnell’s depth and three-point accuracy resulted in them creating further separation from the Scots.
Gadde’s team-high 16 points came on 6-of-8 field goal shooting, including two three-pointers. The Scots’ Donovan Collins had 10 points and five rebounds; Noan Cutler nine points, five assists; and Jeremy Rosario nine points.
Despite the loss, Alma displayed strength in rebounding, finishing with 52 boards. The Scots also moved the ball well, recording 21 assists as a team on their 32 field goals that were made. Defensively, Alma forced 12 turnovers, but Grinnell’s deep rotation and strong three-point shooting (36.5% on 53 attempts) proved challenging to contain.
Alma will look to regroup as they prepare to continue their non-conference season. The Scots will be traveling to Kenosha, Wisconsin, to play Carthage College on Saturday. [private]/
