Ithaca Cub Scout Pack 3631 recently held its annual Pinewood Derby. Seventeen members competed with wooden cars they built. Trophies were given to David Nicewander, Ian Martyn, Lane Brodbeck, Pack Champion Jeffery Lombard, David Bakker and Owen McKnight. Den leader is Steve Bakker.
Shayla Sullivan, a sophomore at Alma High School, has been nominated to attend the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Washington D.C. from Feb. 14-16.
The Fulton crowd recently stormed the court after the Pirates beat conference rival Pewamo-Westphalia 54-51 last Wednesday, January 22. With the win, Fulton created a three-way tie for first place.

Members of the Gratiot County Central Dispatch Authority want a few more financial figures before choosing the location for a new 911 center.
Scholarship coordinator Roger Cook and Post Commander Fred Hoard representing Gratiot Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7805 of Ithaca recently presented Gratiot Community Foundation Director Tina Travis with a check for $3000 for the All Wars Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Four accounting students in Mary Wheeler’s class at Alma High School captured first place in an investment competition in conjunction with Alma College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE). Members of the winning team were Adam Kanine, Brandon Slater, Zach Comer and Stacey Jackson.

30 years ago: 1994
Judith Ann Hall was awarded the Alma Area Chamber of Commerce’s highest honor, the Order of the Tartans at the annual dinner at the Comfort Inn/Shifters.
The D-Ran Farm of Sumner, owned by Randy and D’Anne Smith was honored as the Gratiot County Dairy Farm Family of the year. The official announcement was made at the 35th Annual Gratiot County Dairy Dinner in St. Louis.

40 years ago: 1984
Master Sgt. Randy L. Mallory, son of Ruth E. Mallory or rural Elwell has been decorated with U.S. Air Force Commendation medal at Wordsmith Air Force Base, Mich. He is a 1969 graduated of Alma High School Chaplain Don Warmouth was presented the 1983 Tartan of the Year Award by 1982 recipient Jesse Rockwell.
The Pete and Maggie Ondrus family of the Carson City area was recently honored as the Outstanding Dairy Farm Family at the annual Gratiot County dairy dinner.

50 years ago: 1974
Two Gratiot County students were among the 619 at Michigan State University who achieved a 4.0 or “straight A” average during the fall term. Listed from Gratiot were Steven Whaley of Ithaca, a senior in business law and office administration, and Donna Bateman, Elwell, sophomore, social work.
Lawrence P. Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brown of Ithaca, is a member of the University of Michigan’s Men’s Glee Club. The second oldest glee club in America, it is composed of both graduate and undergraduate members.
Charles Dickens was recently elected as president of the Breckenridge Rotary Club, assuming his official duties in July. [private]
