While he may have retired from coaching Alma High School boys basketball in 2021 after 20 years on the Panthers sidelines, but JT Cleveland certainly hasn’t stopped coaching. He continues to lead Alma’s boys golf team, last winter coached Mid-Michigan Community College’s women’s basketball team, from which he resigned and now is the head of both the men’s and women’s teams at Alma College.
“We are incredibly pleased to welcome JT Cleveland as our next head men’s and women’s golf coach,” Scots athletic director Sarah Dehring said. “Coach Cleveland’s passion for Alma College, his recruitment and retention strategies, and his vision for the golf program set him apart.”
Cleveland graduated from Alma College in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in history, sociology and secondary education. While at Alma, he played on the varsity basketball team, and served as captain during the 1995-96 season. Cleveland was named as an honorable mention for the All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association team that season, as well.
“I’m excited to return to my alma mater. I’d like to thank Sarah Dehring and her incredible staff for this opportunity. It is an honor and a privilege,” said Cleveland. “We will build a culture of commitment, competition, and selflessness that will push each player to their full potential. We will uphold the highest standards of integrity on and off the course. We will produce not only championship golf teams, but also championship people. Go Scots!”
As the varsity golf head coach at Alma High School, Cleveland coached 51 all-conference golfers, added six overall conference medalists, and six more conference championships in his 18 years. Cleveland was named the district, regional, and state of Michigan Coach of the Year in 2013. [private]
