Dear Editor:
We know people may think the Courthouse is a scary place, but it’s not. Judge Rick, Prosecutor Kushion, and Mr. Smith were very amiable. We want to thank them for letting us tour the Courthouse. All of us had a great time and learned a lot of new things.
We now know that in the Courthouse there are framed IOUs that were from people who, in time of need, were given money by the county. We also found out that Gratiot County had a huge forest fire. It wiped out the whole forest! We learned why the Courthouse was built in Ithaca, too. The people put it here because of Ithaca’s location. It is in the middle of Gratiot County.
While we were visiting, Judge Rick told us her courtroom wasn’t the same as Judge Judy’s, and people don’t act like they do on Jerry Springer’s show. She wears a black robe to represent the seriousness of her job. She explained that there are 14 people in the jury box, but only 12 are used. Two serve as alternates. It is cool that jurors are picked using a Bingo Ball!
Mr. Smith, our guide, showed us a time capsule in the sidewalk that was buried in 2000. In 2100, it will be opened. He also explained that Gratiot County has an exchange program with people in Germany! Some of their gifts are displayed in a showcase.
Prosecutor Kushion’s job is very interesting. He prosecutes criminals! He answered many of our questions. We learned about legal and illegal defense.
We want to thank everyone for making our trip an awesome experience. Hopefully we can visit again.
Sincerely,
Kayli Beck, Haley Dutton
